Medsien spotlight

Meet Corine P.

Corine P. started her career in home health nearly 50 years ago! After retiring in 2018, she “got bored” and went back to work as a Care Manager doing home visits until COVID hit, when she transitioned to remote work until the program ended last year. She came to Medsien in August 2021, and we’re glad to have her.

Meet Corine P.

Corine uses her extensive experience in home health to help patients manage their conditions. She came to Medsien because she sees CCM is a “distant relative” to home health care, and so much of health support and intervention happens in the home (e.g. medication errors, equipment needs, red flags like appetite changes and so much more).  At Medsien, Corine can use her extensive experience to help patients better manage their health and chronic health care needs.

Corine most loves the people, their stories and the kindness and gentleness of the patients she works with in her area.  She notes that a really important part of the MA-patient relationship is being a trustworthy advocate for your patient. As a health care professional helping patients navigate the healthcare system and coordinating care with their health professionals requires that you be a “medical friend” who that patient can talk to openly and honestly.

Corine notes that being a good listener is essential to being a good and supportive Care Partner. Assessing patients over the phone can be challenging compared to in person assessments.  However, she says that patients are amazed by what you learn from them when you listen and while it can be harder clinically, the phone assessment and relationship is really gratifying too. Medsien Care Partners are doing great and important work – caring for patients, building relationships and providing support.

Corine and her husband Ron (a musician and Vietnam veteran), have a daughter, two teenage granddaughters and two handicapped Dalmatians – one blind, one deaf. Corine is a very kind, experienced and energetic caregiver and person.  Medsien is delighted that Corine was bored and came out of retirement and is working with us!

Braving the wilderness: Tackling remote care in rural areas
The shortage of doctors/providers in rural areas (shortage of clinics in these areas too) is profound. Shortages are even worse for specialists and sub-specialty care in these settings. Many Medicare patients require complex, specialty care in addition to well managed primary care for chronic conditions.

Aging baby boomers and the growing demand for senior care
Throughout the Great Depression and the Second World War, birthrates in the United States remained fairly low. Following World War II, a post war economic boom saw tremendous expansion of infrastructure and growth of neighborhoods, and a rising middle class. With that growth and economic confidence came a post war baby boom in the United States.

Having the data integrated is helpful, but does not create any important data flows or streamline any data communication or operations. Remote care management is much more than the EHR.
